WTE: X-Men Apocalypse

To be brutally honest, I am not expecting too much out of X-Men Apocalypse. My hope is that if I set my expectations low enough, the movie will exceed them and I will enjoy it. Before I get into what I expect out of the movie, I’m going to tell you a few things that I don’t expect will happen.

First of all, I have seen this rumor floating around that Taylor Swift is going to make a cameo as Dazzler. After doing some research, I have come to the conclusion that there is no truth behind this rumor (thankfully). The other rumor I have heard is that Deadpool will make a surprise appearance. As much as I would love to see this, I don’t expect it to happen. Also, I don’t expect to see Channing Tatum make an appearance as Gambit in this film even though he has a stand-alone movie coming out in October. He recently said in an interview that he doesn’t think we should see this new version of Gambit (another version of Gambit appeared in X-Men Origins:Wolverine) until people know who Gambit really is. It makes sense but I think most people, including myself, would find a new face in the franchise to be quite refreshing.

I expect this movie to be jam packed with action. The trailers and plot summaries that I have seen make me think that there may very well be more fight scenes in this movie than there is in any other installment of the franchise. Unfortunately, one of the main reasons that I am not overly optimistic about Apocalypse is that it seems like it will be the Jennifer Lawrence show. I don’t know about you but I got more than my fill of Jennifer Lawrence in the Hungers Games series. In addition to that, I don’t expect to see enough Wolverine. Cuz who can ever get enough Wolverine? Judging by his very brief appearance in the trailers, I don’t foresee him being in more than a few scenes in the middle parts of the movie.

I really don’t have very much else to say on Apocalypse right now. I’ve never been crazy about X-Men and as much as I want it to be great, I just expect it to be very average in terms of modern superhero films. Sadly, judging pre-release critic reviews it seems that the critics say it is exactly that (57% right now on Rotten Tomatoes). I will be going to see this movie and I don’t want to dissuade anyone from doing so. But take my advice and set your expectations just a little bit lower, and you may be a little more likely to enjoy yourself.
